In 2015, Funkadelic released a triple disc album called First Ya Gotta Shake The Gate, featuring “Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard On You?” Bandleader George Clinton, who contributed on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, released a new remix of the song with Louie Vega. Now, there is another version with Ice Cube. On the track Cube even shouts out his son with, “It’s that self-made Kool-Aid, look what red and blue made/Turned O’Shea to N.W.A,” which is in reference to his son’s starring role in Straight Outta Compton.
It goes without saying the song is a funky one. It is strange because it seems more rooted in what you would hear on a modern day hardcore rap track than what you would hear from the P-Funk that propelled a whole genre on the West. Paradoxically there’s a certain delicate soulful aspect to parts of the song.
