Off the back of his stellar recent release “Mazza” back in November, East London Double MOBO Winner Guvna B comes through with a huge new heater “Battle“. His first of 2020, it is now the second offering from his upcoming new body of work.
Calling upon frequent producer JimmyJames once again, “Battle” is inspired by UK Garage – using the cult classic UKG track of the same name by the legendary Wookie as a perfect sample. You blend the unequivocal bounce of the bassline, the uplifting vocal sample and Guvna’s pensive, heartwarming lyrical ability and raw flow – its a masterfully crafted release. Not to mention the brand new visuals.
Directed by Nwabugo, the artistically afro-centric video is undeniably powerful, with nods to his family and culture. A must watch.
Speaking on its formation, Guvna states: “I feel life is about constantly overcoming battles. It’s a theme I noticed at a young age. From my parents coming over to England from Ghana and battling to give their kids a good life, right down to me trying to give my newborn son that too. We’re all battling something, and I hope this reminds people that we can overcome that.”
Guvna is right to feel powerful right now – the UK scene legend has a serious constellation of stars in his orbit, including J Hus producer TSB, Wretch 32, Ezra Collective and Barney Artist all featuring on his upcoming album. His own podcast series The Loss Tapes sees him discuss real-life issues of loss and its effect on mental health.
With this level of heat and depth, Guvna B can expect 2020 to become a milestone year.
