After teasing the upcoming single for a week now, J. Cole has finally dropped his new track titled “Middle Child”.
J. Cole aims to start off the year strong and has delivered this new masterpiece that serves as his first official single since 2013. Last year, Cole earned major success with his debut album K.O.D. that featured many talented artists including Wale, Moneybagg Yo, and 6Lack.
In “Middle Child” the rapper, who is in fact not a middle child, takes the form of the “little bro and big bro all at once” and gives shout-outs to talented artists such as 21 Savage, JAY-Z, and Kodak Black. He expresses his love and support towards them and their work:
“I love you (…), I’m glad that you came, I hope that you scrape every dollar you can”.
Cole also makes a comment about Drake: “Just put the Rollie right back on my wrist. This watch came from Drizzy, he gave me a gift. Back when the rap game was praying I’d diss. They act like two legends cannot coexist”.
To the creators he looks up to, Cole raps: “I copied your cadence, I mirrored your style. I’m the greatest right now”.
The record label Dreamville also has big plans for 2019. It is set to release three projects, including the Revenge of the Dreamers III compilation, Ari Lennox’s Shea Butter Baby, and EarthGang’s Mirrorland.
Last Week, Cole had finished recording for Revenge of the Dreamers III. The session also comprised the artists T.I., DJ Khaled, Wale, and Swizz Beatz.
