James Gunn’s ‘Starsky & Hutch’ Lands At Amazon, But Won’t Be A Reboot | TV News

James Gunn (Guardians Of The Galaxy) announced he was working on an updated Starsky & Hutch series last week, and it’s already found a home at Amazon, who have given the series a script-to-series commitment. What is that?! I hear you yell out you window to the masses below. It basically means if Amazon likes the script when they see it, they’ll order the show straight to series.

Gunn has also brought his brother Brian Gunn and cousin Mark Gunn on board to write the script James developed. But don’t call it a reboot! Or a remake, either. The upcoming show will be “a continuation of the original series that would deconstruct the buddy cop show in a fun way”.

Gunn went on to add:

“Like Guardians of the Galaxy did with the space opera, it would honour the genre while turning it inside-out. And it would definitely not be a spoof like the 2004 Starsky & Hutch movie – it would be gritty and driven by both characters and high stakes. I came up with a lot of wild ideas – things I can’t go into quite yet – but stuff that got me excited about the prospect of creating a TV show”.

Interesting. For fans of the original show this is likely music to their ears that Gunn’s show won’t be a money-grab remake, and it sounds like he’s got plenty of ideas to make something worth watching.

Joe Lewis, Amazon’s Head Of Comedy, Drama and VR, also seemed excited when he stated: “Chekhov said if you have a gun in the room, it’s going to go off. We can’t wait to see what three Gunns do with Starsky and Hutch.

Hopefully Amazon will find the script to their liking, and if so, they’ll likely be able to bring Gunn on board to at least direct the pilot episode, assuming he can find time in his busy schedule.

Gunn is a great choice to adapt the show, having already been able to tap in to pop culture with his reference-filled Guardians Of The Galaxy films, so hopefully he can bring that same talent to Starsky & Hutch, only with added grit and this time, no Ben Stiller or Owen Wilson.
