Icon of the 60’s and 70’s, Jane Birkin, is to be the new face of the Saint Laurent campaign. The 69 year old has been recruited by the brand’s creative director, Hedi Slimane, to join a list of idols that have fronted the high end fashion line’s advertisements. To name a few; Marilyn Manson, Courtney Love and Joni Mitchell have all been part of Hedi’s ‘Music Project’.
Newly released black and white images show Birkin photographed wearing Le Smoking Tuxedo, originally created by Yves Saint Laurent himself in 1966. An iconic fashion piece for an iconic woman.
FASHION FACT: Jane inspired the creation of the Hermès Birkin Bag in 1981 when she was upgraded on her flight to London. By coincidence, she ended up sitting next to the brand’s Chief Executive, Jean-Louis Dumas. The two struck up a conversation and it was decided that Hermès would collaborate with Jane in return for the use of her last name.
