Jared Leto has signed on to produce and star in a biopic about Karl Lagerfeld, the iconic fashion designer whose career spanned more than 50 years and was best known for his powerful role as artistic director of Chanel. Lagereld died in February 2019, but this project has reportedly already been endorsed by the Karl Lagerfeld fashion house.
The project is still in early stages and a filmmaker is not yet attached to direct, but Leto will produce the film alongside Emma Ludbrook through their production vehicle Paradox.
The movie is expected to explore Lagerfeld’s multitude of relationships, and with his signature white hair, black sunglasses, fingerless gloves, and high detachable collars, Leto will no doubt love diving into such an eccentric and interesting character. He said in a statement:
“Karl had a career that spanned 50-plus years so both personally and professionally he was close to a number of people. I can say we are going to home in on key relationships that convey different parts of his life.”
Pier Paolo Righi, chief executive officer of the Lagerfeld house since 2011, said that they’ve been approached over the years by several Hollywood producers who suggested to partner on a movie about Karl’s iconic life:
“It has been only since we met Jared and Emma that we felt truly confident about the story being told in the artistic way Karl would have loved to see. Throughout our conversations, we have created an equally trustful and inspiring creative relationship that will allow us to work together very fluidly on this beautiful project.”
We’ll wait to hear more about the project, which will hopefully do Lagerfeld’s life justice but also introduce his work to an audience not familiar with fashion.
Leto was recently seen in superhero film Morbius and AppleTV+ series WeCrashed. His next project is lending is voice to Disney’s Haunted Mansion film, which will arrive in 2023.
