Kevin Smith is coming back to his roots. Having veered away from his honeypot of slacker comedies that made him a cult hero and into genre territory with films such as Red State, Tusk and Yoga Hosers, Smith is bringing back his most beloved creation: Jay and Silent Bob.
Smith announced earlier this year that he was working on another Jay and Silent Bob film, but wasn’t sure if he would get the funding or studio backing. Well, he’s got his wish.
The tweet below shows the stoner slackers hanging out in front of the Miramax lot, and Smith confirmed that the film, already referencing the meta aspects of Smith’s work with the bluntly-titled Jay And Silent Bob Reboot, will begin shooting this autumn (or “fall”, if like Smith you prefer the American vernacular).

The duo haven’t been on the big screen since supporting roles in 2008’s Clerks 2, and with nostalgic reboots all the rage on both the big and small screens, it’s no surprise that Jay and Silent Bob have found an easy route back to Hollywood.
Smith described the film as “a fun flick in which the Jersey boys have to go back to Hollywood to stop a brand new reboot of the old ‘Bluntman & Chronic Movie’ they hated so much. It’s a tongue-in-cheek, silly-ass satire that pokes fun at the movie business’s recent re-do obsession, featuring an all-star cast of cameos and familiar faces!”.
Smith’s recent work has mostly floundered in the critical doldrums, but you’ll have a hard time finding moviegoers who don’t have good memories of his 90s/early 2000s output. With Smith at the helm there’s at least the guarantee that this isn’t solely a mindless rebooted cash-in, and should have some heart to it.
Let’s hope so, at least. The world could use some irreverent stoner comedy it its cinemas.
