Jeanine Mason (Grey’s Anatomy) has been cast as the lead of the CW pilot Roswell, a reboot with an immigration twist on the classic sci-fi series. Like the original show, Roswell will be based on the Roswell High book series by Melinda Metz, but will have a darker tone than the original show.
Written by Carina Adly Mackenzie (The Originals) and directed by Julie Plec, the new show will follow Liz Ortecho reluctantly returning to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico. A jaded biomedical researcher, and the daughter of undocumented immigrants, she’s haunted by a tragic incident in her past.
She then discovers a shocking truth about her high school crush, now a police officer; he’s an alien, and the two team up to try and find out more about his origins. But when a violent attack and a long-standing government cover-up signals a greater alien presence on earth than previously thought, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and tear apart their deepening romance.
It’s not too surprising that The CW have been drawn to another rebooted series with a darker twist, as they’ve found huge success with their darker reboot of the Archie comics, Riverdale. They’ll hope Roswell will turn out to be as popular, and it certainly has the source material and relevant themes to capture an audience.
