After last weekend’s box office success of Straight Outta Compton, producer Scott Bernstein must seem convinced he has the winning formula for crafting successful musician biopics, as he is currently developing a biopic of legendary soul singer Aretha Franklin. It has been revealed that the front runner for the lead role is Jennifer Hudson, the former American Idol contestant who won the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ Oscar Award back in 2007 for her role in Dreamgirls – another successful musical biopic.
Hudson hasn’t exactly been prolific in the acting department since winning the award – although she is currently been seen on the small screen in Empire (a show about music – surprise, surprise) and has just finished filming a role in Spike Lee‘s Chiraq, which is rumoured to be a hip-hop musical. It seems there is nothing Hudson can’t do – apart from star in films where she doesn’t have to sing in any way. There are no announced release dates yet, but after the success of Straight Outta Compton, it seems like this will be rushing into production quite soon.
