Sony’s Venom movie is coming along nicely. Following the casting of Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed, Jenny Slate (Obvious Child) has now signed on to play an as-yet unknown role, though Variety boldly reports that she’ll play “a scientist”.
Slate’s addition creates an even more well-rounded cast, with everyone but Hardy’s titular anti-hero having their role still largely under wraps. Reports are that the film will feature the villain Carnage, though reportedly, despite Ahmed reading for the role, the studio is still on the hunt for an actor to play the character.
Venom is set to be Sony’s first film in their Spiderman universe, which is currently sans Spiderman thanks to the deal between themselves and Marvel to have Spiderman appear in the MCU, at least for now. Until then Sony is focusing on creating a universe of Spiderman-related characters, with this standalone Venom film being the first, and Silver & Black currently scheduled to be the second.
Rueben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) will be directing the film, and with the addition of Slate, has an extremely talented cast to work with and pleasantly, a cast of actors not traditionally used often in blockbusters (Hardy aside). Hopefully these interesting casting decisions prove successful.
But Fleischer and co. better get moving, as Venom is currently scheduled for an October 5, 2018 release date, and with likely plenty of post-production time needed, expect more casting announcements and a production start date very soon.
