Lynne Ramsay has secured two big name actors for her follow up to You Were Never Really Here. The star of that film, Joaquin Phoenix, is returning to work with Ramsay alongside Rooney Mara in a film titled Polaris.
Unfortunately, no plot details are currently available for the film. No one currently seems to know what genre it even resides in. But Ramsay once again directing Phoenix, with the addition of his real-life romantic partner Mara, is cause for celebration. Ramsay previously had this to say about Phoenix:
“He’s crazy, but he’s the best actor I’ve ever met. Everything he does on the set has a reason. It’s much more difficult when you come up with an original idea like this, but it’s impossible not to get excited when you’re preparing a movie with Joaquin”.
Even though we know next to nothing about the film, the fact that we’re talking about a new Ramsay film at all is a big positive. The director is rather notorious for big gaps between her films.
2002’s Morvern Callar was followed by a nine-year wait for We Need To Talk About Kevin, which led to a six-year gap until You Were Never Really Here. Although it’s already been four years since that film, it only got a wide release in 2018, so it’s really only been about three, extremely quick for Ramsay to have her next film in development.
Ramsay was reported to be tackling an adaptation of Stephen King‘s The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon last November, but news on that has since gone cold. Ramsay having two concurrent projects in the works might make the film world explode, so it’s possible that Tom Gordon has been usurped, at least temporarily, in order for Polaris to exist.
Phoenix has barely been seen since winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for Joker, but he does have a few other fascinating projects lined up. One is Mike Mills‘ C’mon C’mon, and the other is Ari Aster‘s Midsommar follow-up, Disappointment Blvd. It’s no surprise that after winning an Oscar, Phoenix pretty much has the option to only work with interesting directors.
Mara has also been quiet over the last few years, having not been seen on the screen since 2018, likely due to her recent pregnancy. She did recently wrap filming on Guillermo Del Toro‘s Nightmare Alley, and just joined the cast of Sarah Polley‘s adaptation of Miriam Toews‘ novel Women Talking.
We’ll cross our fingers and hope that details about Polaris arrive soon. And maybe we’ll also get word on whether The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is still happening. Either way, it looks like Ramsay isn’t going to make her fans wait too long for her next film.
