John Boyega has landed a leading role in James Ponsoldt’s The Circle. The Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor will join Emma Watson and Tom Hanks in the adaptation of Dave Eggers thrilling novel. It centres on one woman’s journey into the world’s most powerful Internet corporation, linking the world’s social media, banking and purchasing, with one universal operating system.
The film will question the ethics of online privacy, democracy and freedom of speech as idealism spirals into something much darker. Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now, Smashed) has received praise for his unsentimental depiction of youth in crisis, and has continually drawn uncompromisingly compelling performances from his young cast.
