Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad sequel is certainly going to look a lot different to the first film. James Gunn is on board to direct, Will Smith is no longer a part of the cast, and now it looks as if wrestlers are invading the sequel. It was reported not long ago that Dave Bautista was being considered for the film, but it now looks like another wrestler will take his place – John Cena.
Variety reports that Cena is up for the role of Peacemaker, the part originally offered to Bautista. Bautista had to turn down the role because of his hectic schedule.
Despite the utter failings of the first Suicide Squad, the sequel is now shaping up to be very intriguing. The addition of Gunn behind the camera is a welcome one as he’s already proven to be adept at helming superhero team-up films with Guardians Of The Galaxy. Idris Elba is also on board as a brand new character, and it looks as if Cena will be as well.
If all is signed on the dotted line, this is the latest big role Cena has secured in hist post-wrestling career. He’s found a niche in comedies such as Blockers and Sisters, but also played the villain in the Transformers spinoff, Bumblebee. Obviously with his background a comic book movie makes sense, and it will be interesting to see how he fits in The Suicide Squad.
Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn is still expected to be the focal point of the film. Viola Davis and Jai Courtney are returning, and there’s reportedly many discussions in-studio as to what DC characters will be involved in the sequel.
The film is expected to head into production in the autumn. The Suicide Squad hits cinemas August 6, 2021.
