Julia Hart has signed on to direct a feature adaptation of Samantha Downing‘s 2019 novel My Lovely Wife at Netflix.
Hart will also co-write the script with husband Jordan Horowitz, who is producing through his Original Headquarters banner. Brian Kavanaugh Jones and Fred Berger will also produce for Automatic, as will Roy Lee and Miri Yoon for Vertigo.
Described as Mr. and Mrs. Smith meets Dexter, the story follows ordinary suburban spouses who keep their relationship alive by committing serial murders and getting away with it.
Hart reportedly beat out a number of other directors for the coveted job. She’s best known for directing the Lily Rabe drama Miss Stevens, indie superhero drama Fast Color, and neo-noir crime film I’m Your Woman.
In her career so far she’s shown a knack for reinventing herself, and My Lovely Wife sounds like another interesting project in a eclectic oeuvre.
My Lovely Wife joins a slate of other in development Netflix original films which includes Adam Sandler sci-fi drama Spaceman, romance Love at First Sight with Haley Lu Richardson and Ben Hardy, Bradley Cooper‘s Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro, Dev Patel‘s directorial debut Monkey Man, and superhero sequel The Old Guard 2.
Imminent Netflix releases include Jennifer Lopez action drama The Mother, which is due Friday, May 12, and Extraction 2, a sequel to the 2020 film that starred Chris Hemsworth. That arrives Friday, June 16.
