Fresh off her role in Jane Campion‘s western The Power Of The Dog, Kirsten Dunst has signed on to star in a completely different film: Alex Garland‘s (Ex Machina, Annihilation) new sci-fi project Civil War, which is being developed at A24.
Plot details are under wraps right now, but word is that the film takes place in a future dystopian America – Iron Man and Captain America certainly won’t be anywhere to be found. Garland is also writing the script and has also secured Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Cailee Spaeny for supporting roles.
Garland broke out with the acclaimed Ex Machina in 2014, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. He’s since directed 2018’s Annihilation and Hulu series Devs, all of which reside in the sci-fi genre, so this is familiar territory for him.
However his latest film, Men, an upcoming horror drama starring Jessie Buckley that revolves around a young woman who goes on a solo holiday in the English countryside after the death of her ex-husband, sounds a lot more grounded than his previous work. It’s currently in post-production.
Each piece of Garland’s work thus far has been a fascinating meditation on how technology and humans are going to co-exist in the future as the former becomes more prominent in our lives. Despite the lack of details, expect something similarly dense and dark from Civil War.
While Men, likely due out later this year, looks like a deviation from Garland’s typical ideas, Civil War sounds like an extension of the themes that quickly made him one of the most talked about new directors of the 2010s. Now we wait for more details to arrive.
