Los Angeles-based electro-soul, contemporary R&B singer-songwriter Darrin Jonathan Banks has just dropped his brand new single “Perfection”. A visual will soon be released to accompany the song.
“Perfection” is a song for every person that is striving to do his very best and yet is never feeling like they quite measure up. It is like every self-help book or spiritual guru who gently reminds us that striving for perfection will only lead to more pain. This song is here to reduce to silence the inner saboteur that we can find inside of us, so people will, hopefully, feel less alone in this kind of struggle.
Bank’s new single is a reference to classic house grooves that are blended with some multi-layered harmonies and inspirational lyrics.
“Perfection” was written and produced by Banks himself, but he also collaborated with producers Arthur (Art Bleak) Pochon, Shaun Oppedisano and Marco Tornillo. It also features proficient musicians such as Karen Hammack – on keys, Antoine Salem – on guitar – and Joel Ricci from the Lucky Brown Band on trumpet.
After living in New York City for a decade, Darrin Jonathan Banks relocated to Los Angeles, where he is now living. Like many R&B artists, he started singing in a church choir when he was seven in North Carolina, where he grew up.
That is where he understood the power of music as well as its capacity to touch people’s emotions. After that, he continued with private singing and piano lessons. During his formative years, he was already fortunate to work professionally – acting, singing and dancing.
Banks is drawing his inspiration from a wide spectrum of musical genres that include rock and folk but his music is outside the lines of genre-box as he pushes the boundaries of conventionality. He has a strong appreciation for neo-soul, indie-pop and classic R&B but his music sits more in the electro-soul and retro pop genres with reference to classic R&B – that are fused with some electronic elements to modernize the sound.
He launched his musical career as he was moved by the events following the killing of George Floyd with his debut single “I Can’t Breathe” which is an intimate battle hymn written in the same spirit as the ’60s protest songs. After that, he released two other singles “WYN?” and “That Feeling”. He explores the themes of the universal challenges of the human condition, self-doubt and persevering in the face of adversity.
Banks wants to encourage others to live out loudly and proudly as well as eradicate all barriers to society becoming a more inclusive and accepting place for all to thrive in.
