Ridley Scott has been trying to get Gucci made for years. A true crime drama about the murder of fashion trailblazer Maurizio Gucci – with a script by Roberto Bentivenga and based on the 2001 book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed by Sara Gay Forden – has struggled to get off the ground over the last decade plus, despite having big names interested.
Back in 2009, Angelina Jolie and Leonardo DiCaprio were circling the lead roles. How did that fall through? By 2012, it seemed Scott was stepping aside to let his daughter Jordan Scott take over as director, but now Ridley is back, and he’s found his lead actress.
Lady Gaga has reportedly signed on to play Patrizia Reggiani, Gucci’s ex-wife convicted of orchestrating his hit after he had an affair. On top of that, MGM have acquired the project. Giannina Scott, Ridley’s wife, will produce alongside her husband, and said in a statement:
“The story is so epic, the stakes so high and the characters so richly drawn that we were determined to get it to the big screen. To say we are thrilled to be teaming with Mike De Luca and his brilliant film group at MGM is an understatement. We can’t wait to see this come to life next year”.
The studio is reportedly so excited about the project that they’ve already set a release date – November 24, 2021 – despite the fact that Scott is still in the middle of shooting The Last Duel, which obviously is currently shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. The plan is for Scott to dive right into Gucci immediately after The Last Duel is complete.
That’s a couple of big names involved in Gaga and Scott. If someone similar in stature to DiCaprio joins them, this will be one of the most star studded films of 2021. Hopefully the final film will be worth waiting a over a decade for.
