Laura Dern (Marriage Story) and Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games series) have signed on to star in Lonely Planet, a romance film in the works at Netflix. Susannah Grant, who previously helmed the acclaimed crime limited series Unbelievable for the streamer, will write and direct the film.
Specifics regarding the plot are being kept under wraps, but we do know that it’s a love story set in Morocco. Grant will also produce the film alongside Sarah Timberman and Liza Chasin for 3dot Productions, which continues the creative partnership between them and Netflix, having signed a first-look deal back in 2019.
Since then, 3dot have produced a number of projects that will premiere on Netflix soon, including thriller series Anatomy Of A Scandal based on Sarah Vaughn‘s book, as well as adaptations of Taylor Jenkins Reid‘s bestseller The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Diane Cardwell‘s memoir Rockaway.
Dern will be seen in Jurassic World: Dominion later this year, while she’s also currently working on Florian Zeller‘s The Son, the follow-up to his Oscar winning film The Father. Hemsworth was last seen in 2020 crime film Arkansas and also played the lead in short-lived Quibi action series Most Dangerous Game.
Grant might be best known for her work on Unbelievable, but she has plenty of experience in film, having written Pocahontas, In Her Shoes, The Soloist, and Erin Brockovich, which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. She also wrote and directed 2006 romcom Catch And Release.
We’ll wait for more details arrive, but maybe Lonely Planet is another romantic comedy trying to capitalise on the mini-revival that’s occurring?
We’ve already seen throwback romcoms like Marry Me and The Lost City released this year, and with the George Clooney–Julia Roberts flick Ticket To Paradise, Reese Witherspoon‘s Your Place Or Mine, and the Kaley Cuoco–Pete Davidson team up Meet Cute arriving soon, we’ll see if this revival is real or just a tease.
