Per Variety, Lea Seydoux (No Time To Die) and George MacKay (1917) have signed on to star in The Beast, an epic, decade-spanning sci-fi romance from acclaimed director Bertrand Bonello.
The film takes place between Paris and California, and is set in a near future where emotions have become a threat. Gabrielle has finally decided to purify her DNA in a machine that will immerse her in her past lives and rid her of any strong feelings. But when she meets Louis, although he seems dangerous, she feels a powerful connection to him as if she’d known him forever.
Late French actor Gaspard Ulliel was previously attached to star in the film. Kinology, the company behind Leos Carax‘s recent bizarre musical Annette, are handling international sales. The film is expected to shoot in both French and English.
Bonello is best known for his fascinating explorations of class and privilege in films such as Nocturama, House Of Tolerance, and Saint Laurent. His most recent film, Coma, which starred Ulliel and will be the first to be released following his death, premiered earlier this year at the Berlin Film Festival. No wide release date has been set yet.
Seydoux continues to work with acclaimed directors. Her next film will be David Cronenberg‘s Crimes Of The Future, which is due out next month, while she’s also working with Mia Hanson-Løve on drama One Fine Morning.
MacKay was last seen in Netflix spy thriller Munich – The Edge Of War and has another Netflix film, Babak Anvari‘s I Came By, due out sometime in 2022.
The Beast is expected to begin filming in August.
