Scoring both the biggest ever September opening and the biggest opening for a British 18-rated production, Tom Hardy’s Kray Twins drama Legend effortlessly took the box office number one spot over the weekend, with an impressive £5,189,074 take. This is the highest opening weekend for a film with Tom Hardy in the lead role, narrowly beating Mad Max: Fury Road earlier this year; in supporting roles, the film is dwarfed by opening takes for Inception and The Dark Knight Rises.

Other new entries filled the top positions, as Maze Runner sequel The Scorch Trials had a reasonably impressive second place opening with £2,799,428, whilst director M. Night Shymalan‘s thriller The Visit opened in third place with £1,031,292. Outside of the new releases, no other movie crossed the £1 million barrier this weekend – but the success of both Legend and The Scorch Trials is set to carry on to next week, when the big new release is Everest.
