Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover, may have recently lost out on a Grammy Award for ‘Best Rap Album’ to Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2 this year, but his semi-autobiographical TV series ‘Atlanta’ will be screening on FX later this year. Gambino was also nominated for ‘Best Rap Performance’ with “3005” but was beaten by Kendrick Lamar with “I”. Balancing music, acting and screenwriting is proving doable for Donald Glover because of his continuing successes and his innovative approach.
His last mixtape S T N M T N was released for free along with accompanying EP Kauai – the proceeds of which are going towards protecting the Hawaiian Island which it’s named after. A few networks were reportedly interested in Atlanta including NBC but finally the show went to FX because they were willing to work around Glover’s musical commitments. Atlanta, which follows two cousins working their way up in the rap game, is roughly based on Glover’s experiences growing up and will air this year on FX.
