The narrative rights to the Hulk character are a little tricky right now. They’re tangled between Marvel and Universal right now, basically meaning that a standalone Hulk film is very unlikely from Marvel right now. However, that doesn’t mean the studio can’t get a little sneaky, and reportedly the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok will begin a Hulk trilogy hidden within other films.
This comes from Mark Ruffalo, who plays the character, who told CinemaBlend that the film will begin a Hulk arc which is set to continue through Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4.
“So basically, Kevin [Feige] pulled me aside before this, and said, ‘If we were going to do a standalone Hulk movie, what would it be?’ And I said, ‘I think it should be this, this, this, and this and this, and ends up like this.’ And he’s like, ‘I love that. Why don’t we do that in the next three movies, starting with Thor 3 and then we go into Avengers 3 and 4.’ And I was like, ‘That sounds great!’ And so we are at the beginning of this arc”.
While there aren’t many details available, the mini Hulk trilogy, or whatever fans will call it, will somewhat chart the evolution of Hulk and Bruce Banner as separate individuals, which is set to be prompted by Hulk being a little more vocal in Thor: Ragnarok.
So when the new Thor film arrives, there’s now added intrigue for fans, who not only get to see the Hulk for the first time since Avengers: Age Of Ultron, but can begin to chart his own story arc.
Thor: Ragnarok arrives Friday, November 3.
