Kat Coiro, who directed the Jennifer Lopez–Owen Wilson romcom Marry Me that is currently in cinemas, must have impressed people with her work behind the camera, as she’s already secured her next project.
Coiro will direct an adaptation of Liane Moriarty‘s bestselling book The Husband’s Secret for Sony, with Christy Hall and Paul Weitz penning the script.
The novel revolves around three women whose lives unexpectedly interconnect after one of them finds a letter from her husband with instructions to only be opened in the event of his death. She opens the letter anyway, and the devastating secret she discovers leads to massive consequences for her and the other women.
An adaptation of one of Moriarty’s books makes sense, as she’s already had plenty of her work make the jump from page to screen. Her bestseller Big Little Lies was adapted into the popular HBO series, while her most recent novel, Nine Perfect Strangers, became a Hulu series. Another of her novels, Apples Never Fall, is currently being developed as a series for Peacock.
Coiro’s Marry Me has performed solidly at the box office so far despite also being released concurrently on Peacock. Big screen romantic comedies are mostly a thing of the past, so it’s refreshing to see one do okay in 2022.
Coiro has also previously directed for TV, on shows such as Brooklyn Nine-Nine, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Modern Family, and Shameless.
She’s also helmed episodes for the upcoming Disney+ series She-Hulk, which is expected to premiere later this year.
We’ll wait and see if the plot of The Husband’s Secret is kept intact, as a number of Moriarty’s novels that have been adapted to screen have seen Hollywood differ slightly from her original storylines. Either way, this looks like a smart move by Sony to not only forge ahead with another Moriarty adaptation, but to secure Coiro now before she becomes even more in demand.
