DJ superstar Marshmello will deliver a six-minute virtual performance for the opening ceremony of the UEFA Champions League Final on May 29 in Portugal at the Estádio do Dragão. The all-British champions league final match between Manchester City and Chelsea will also feature special guests to be announced later this week.
The whole spectacle will be broadcast to over 200 countries and presented by UEFA and Pepsi, who have forged a strong partnership since 2015.
The advertisement that announced Marshmello is very creative. We see the artist contemplating where his next gig should be and being messaged by the biggest stars of football such as Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba and Jadon Sancho, proposing their home cities as a destination.
With Mello’s 2020 Juice Wrld collaboration “Come & Go” playing in the background, he chooses to go to Porto in Portugal. Marshmello will become the first electronic producer to play at such a globally-renowned sporting event.
Speaking about the announcement, the artist says, “This really has been a year like no other. I’m looking forward to giving my sport, music, and pure entertainment fans a show like they have never seen. Thanks to Pepsi and UEFA, that is exactly what I am going to bring to the world, a performance that everyone can enjoy”.
This year’s Champions League Final should happen in Istanbul’s Atatürk Stadium but was moved to Portugal, after the UK listed Turkey on its ‘red list’ in terms of COVID-19 travel restrictions, and would mean that fans from the UK would not have been able to attend.
According to the Union of European Football Associations, they have discussed and tried everything to move the match to England but it was not possible to get the necessary exemptions from UK quarantine arrangements, and as Portugal remains on the UK green list, it meant that British fans can travel to the country for the match and so it was the most viable option.
