Mary Lambert Reveals Inspiration Behind Macklemore’s ‘Same Love’ | Music News

Mary Lambert was the vocalist for Macklemore’s massive 2012 hit “Same Love”. She spoke to Newsbeat about what the song means to her and how it relates to the “darkest times” in her teenage years. “It felt like this divine moment, I was, like, this is what I have been waiting for. I was raped, I’m clinically bipolar, I was gay and came out in the church. I was like I am one person and I cannot handle this, I don’t know how I am supposed to get through this. But there was that thing that was just like ‘stick around just a little bit longer’ and I did and I am really glad I did“, she explained.

With regards to the “Same Love” song, she said, “I think Macklemore and Ryan had asked a lot of people to do this song and they had turned it down, when they sent me the song, I couldn’t believe there was a song that so explicitly tells my story. There was this nagging feeling during the darkest times of my life where I felt that there was something I needed to do but I didn’t know what it was. I know I have to hold on and when I got that call that was when I was like ‘there it is, that is what it is what I have been waiting for’“. Now she says she is “living the life I always dreamed I would“.
