Actor Michael Cera has partnered up with musician and member of indie-rock band The Unicorns, Alden Penner for an 11-date European tour, courtesy of Bird On The Wire Events, which will feature Alden’s music and collaborations between the two talented musicians – most notably new single “Meditate”.
The 100 Club on Oxford Street was the chosen location for the London show and opening of the tour earlier this week. A tiny Jazz venue, sandwiched between an Ann Summers lingerie shop and a Boots Pharmacy, it blends into the walls of the busy street. With a one-hundred-person capacity, and its secretive location, the 100 club was the perfect place for the intimate show that these musicians provided.
The hazy, dreamlike sounds from Penner’s new EP Canada In Space resonated well within the four walls, each person tapping a foot along to the reminiscent sounds of Penner’s folk and indie styles. Using a variety of instruments, Cera switched effortlessly between keyboard, acoustic and bass guitar, supporting the richness of Penner’s lead guitar and vocals. The small crowd made the gig extra special in the way that the audience could connect to the two musicians, close both spatially but also conversationally, as close friends Penner and Cera cracked little quips and jokes in-between songs.
All in all an entertaining and enlightening show which enabled both parties to show off their musical talents within the confines of a tiny, warm basement venue, complete with a committed fan base and hilariously designed ET collaboration t-shirts on sale. You can catch Alden Penner and Michael Cera’s European tour at any of these remaining shows.
