Michelle Yeoh Joins James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ Sequels | Film News

Michelle Yeoh may not be having a breakout, but she’s certainly have a resurgence. The huge success of Crazy Rich Asians has led to the industry veteran getting a bunch of offers, leading to her own Star Trek: Discovery spinoff and a key role in Paul Feig‘s new comedy Last Christmas. But the biggest role is her latest one – she’s signed on to join James Cameron‘s Avatar sequels.

Yeoh will play a scientist named Dr. Karina Mogue in multiple sequels to the highest grossing film of all time. Cameron tweeted out: “Michelle has always created unique and memorable characters. I look forward to working with her to do the same thing on the Avatar sequels”.

Yeoh is the most successful Malaysian actress of all time, having starred in huge films such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Tomorrow Never Dies, Sunshine, and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2.

The Avatar sequels have been a longtime coming. So long in fact, that it’s hard to gauge if there’s even public interest there. That seems strange to say for follow-ups to the highest grossing film of all time, but Avatar certainly hasn’t had the staying power of previous highest grossing films, such as Cameron’s own Titanic.

There’s still a long wait for Avatar 2 to arrive. It’s currently scheduled to hit cinemas on December 18, 2020. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver are all returning, while the film will boast new faces in the form of Kate Winslet, Edie Falco, Oona Chaplin, and Vin Diesel.

Hopefully Yeoh has a substantial part, and hopefully the long wait for the sequels is worth it.
