Three in-demand actors are reportedly at the top of the shortlist to nab a plum role in the upcoming Top Gun sequel. While Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer are reprising their roles as Maverick and Iceman, respectively, their departed partner Goose (previously played by Anthony Edwards) will still be somewhat a part of the film as his now adult son will be a major presence.
The three frontrunner for the role? Miles Teller, Nicholas Hoult and Glen Powell. Reportedly testing has been ongoing with Cruise and producers Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison a big part of the process. Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner) and Austin Butler (The Shannara Chronicles) were in the mix at an earlier stage, but the shortlist is now narrowed to three.
So who might have the inside track to the role? On the surface that would be Teller, who recently starred in Joseph Kosinski‘s Only The Brave, and Kosinski is also at the helm of Top Gun: Maverick, reuniting with Cruise after they made the sci-fi thriller Oblivion together. An actor who has had success working with the director on a previous project is certainly a big help.
However, Glen Powell might be a better fit for the role. He’s got less of the tough vibe of Teller but evokes a kindness that might make him feel more similar to Edwards’ portrayal of Goose. He’s broken out over the last few years with roles in Everybody Wants Some!!, Hidden Figures, and most recently the acclaimed Netflix romantic comedy, Set It Up.
Nicholas Hoult might be the least likely for the role right now, but he’d also be a safe choice and could bring an animated, lively presence to the character. He recently wrapped filming on the J.R.R. Tolkien biopic Tolkien and will reprise his role as Beast in X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
We’ll likely hear news of who has won the role over the next few weeks, as while principal photography has yet to begin, pre-shoots are underway as Cruise recently revealed the first image of himself back in costume. Top Gun: Maverick is set to hit cinemas July 12, 2019.
