The beloved Mystery Science Theater 3000, the show that originally made mocking bad movies fun, ran for 197 episodes during its original run from 1988 to 1997 before seemingly being gone forever. But after Netflix renewed the show and premiered it back in April, it became their highest rated show according to Rotten Tomatoes, and they’ve now renewed the series for an additional season.
Creator Joel Hodgson and stars Jonah Ray and Felicia Day made the announcement that MST3K: The Return would make a return to Netflix for a twelfth season in the “not too distant future”.
Hodgson added: “I’ll tell you more as soon as I can. But for today, I hope you’ll be as happy as I am to know that our Kickstarter worked: thanks to you, Mystery Science Theater 3000 will be back for even more new episodes”.
The Kickstarter Hodgson refers to is the original campaign that he began in 2015 that pledged to bring back MST3K for new episodes. The response was incredible, and through fan contributions the campaign netted $5.7 million, a Kickstarter record, and got Netflix interested in distributing the new season.
It’s an apt time for the announcement to arrive, as MST3K super fans annually binge the series as part of the MST3K Turkey Day Marathon. The turkey will have got down even better this year after this announcement.
