Nancy Meyers is finally getting the chance to make another movie, this time at Netflix. She will write, direct and produce the project, which will be her first feature film since 2015’s (remarkably charming) The Intern.
The partnership between Meyers and Netflix developed when they teamed to release short film Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish), which debuted on the streamer’s social channels in 2020. The special project brought together the cast of Father Of The Bride and its sequel (both of which Meyers wrote) for the first time in 25 years.
Meyers wrote and directed the Banks family reunion clip, which included appearances from Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, and Robert De Niro, was produced by Reese Witherspoon, and benefitted World Central Kitchen. The success of that reunion obviously got Netflix interested enough in giving Meyers the reigns to direct her seventh movie.
Details on the project are sparse, but the film is being described as an ensemble comedy, which is something Meyers has perfected over the years. She’s helmed movies such as It’s Complicated, Something’s Gotta Give, What Women Want, and The Holiday. She also produced her daughter Hallie Meyers-Shyer‘s directorial debut Home Again – an ensemble comedy! – in 2017.
Meyers’ films have had positive retrospectives over the years as the big-budget romantic comedy has almost completely disappeared from Hollywood. Her work hearkens back to a different time in the industry, and it’ll be exciting to see if she can recapture that magic with this new Netflix project. More details are sure to come.
