Neill Blomkamp Interested In Directing ‘Iron Man’? | Film News

Director Neill Blomkamp burst onto the scene in 2009 with District 9, a nuanced, emotional sci-fi film that was also a technical marvel. He followed that up with Elysium and Chappie; also sci-fi films that were technical marvels. So it’s no surprise at all that he’s interested in directing an Iron Man film.

When asked on Twitter by a fan on what character he would love to direct a movie about within the MCU, Blomkamp replied:

While this is just a hypothetical brought about by an answer on Twitter, it’s worth discussing. As the MCU has become this juggernaut in Hollywood, they have toned down the creativity in their directors in order for their films to resemble each other closely in everything from pacing to colour grading. Directors within the MCU have practically become interchangeable.

Bringing aboard someone like Blomkamp and giving him free reign to let his hair down and get his creative juices flowing would be the shot in the arm the MCU needs. While its popularity remains incredibly high, if each film fails to differentiate from the other, audiences will soon catch on and get bored.

Bring Blomkamp on board for the next Iron Man film and there’s a very good chance something fresh and interesting comes from it.

Of course, right now this is just speculation. Less than that, even. Blomkamp is currently working on his Oats Studios short films, which has given the director the opportunity to make whatever he wants in bitesize chunks. There’s hope that with enough interest, some Oats Studios shorts could be developed into feature length films.

Time will tell whether the interest and studio backing is there for Blomkamp to take his original ideas to the big screen. If not, perhaps Marvel come calling.
