Surinamese/Dutch folk-pop singer-songwriter Néomí, officially known as Neomi Speelman, has once again captured hearts with her latest single “Your Girl,” released on October 5th through [PIAS].
This release follows the notable success of her EP after, which was unveiled in April. With such evocative music, Néomí has garnered acclaim from various music platforms like The Sunday Times and The Line of Best Fit.
In “Your Girl,” Néomí transitions into a dream-pop-inspired style, a divergence from her staple acoustic-led approach that fans have come to adore. This single hints at the musical direction she’s veering towards for her anticipated debut album slated for 2024.
Diving into the essence of the song, Néomí shared, “For the first time I’ve started to write music not from a place of sadness, but a place of anger.”
The song delves deep into the theme of identity, touching upon the way individuals can lose themselves in the perceptions others have of them. This reflection emerged from her own experiences of feeling as though she was performing a version of herself painted by others.
However, staying true to her essence, Néomí admits that her songs still have underpinnings of love. This song reflects her journey of personal growth, intertwined with feelings of love, loss, and self-awareness.
Born in The Netherlands with Surinamese roots, Néomí’s musical journey is both captivating and unique. Her initial aversion to music after five years of uninspiring piano lessons was transformed after discovering a live performance by Ben Howard on an online platform.
This experience was so profound that she picked up a guitar and embarked on self-taught sessions, eventually earning her a place at a music school in Amsterdam due to an administrative oversight. Her growth since then has been nothing short of meteoric, drawing inspiration from iconic artists like Bon Iver, Bob Dylan, and Ben Howard.
2020 posed challenges for Néomí as the global pandemic halted her breakout year. Nevertheless, she utilized the time to further hone her songwriting skills. By 2022, she had achieved over 2 million streams with her debut EP ‘before,’ and 2023 marked significant milestones with major performances and an EP launch.
Now, fans have something more to look forward to, as Néomí is all set for her headline show on May 25th, 2024 at Tolhuistuin, Amsterdam. As she continues to etch her mark on the music scene, one can’t help but be captivated by her sincere stories and ethereal soundscapes.
