Netflix have announced that the second season of Russian Doll will premiere on April 20, 2022. The first season received four Primetime Emmy nominations, including ‘Outstanding Comedy Series’ and ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series’.
Season one of Russian Doll follows Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) as she becomes stuck in a Groundhog Day-style time loop. Nadia repeatedly meets her inescapable death at the end of her 36th birthday party, only to wake up the next day as if nothing had happened. On her quest to overcome the curse, Nadia meets Alan (Charlie Barnett) who is also stuck in a cycle of endless death.
Just six months after the series first premiered on Netflix, it was renewed for a second season. However, there were major delays to production in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, and filming could not officially begin until 2021. After a long wait, fans are ecstatic that the show will finally be returning this spring, and are intrigued by what the seven-part series will have in store.
According the official synopsis, the second season will be “set four years after Nadia and Alan escaped mortality’s time loop together” who find themselves “delving deeper into their pasts through an unexpected time portal located in one of Manhattan’s most notorious locations.”
Just like the previous season, Lyonne not only stars as the lead, but also wrote and directed the series with the help of comedians Amy Poehler (Saturday Night Live) and Leslye Headland.
