Although the Netflix original film Bright is set to arrive on the streaming service tomorrow, they’ve already ordered a sequel to the violent fantasy film. Rarely does a sequel to a film get commissioned before the film is released, but Netflix has never been about doing things the traditional way, and they’re obviously confident in the product on their hands.
Netflix is reportedly looking to go toe-to-toe with the big studios when it comes to a fantasy franchise. The film is directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad), written by Max Landis and stars Will Smith, Joel Edgerton and Noomi Rapace. The coup for the sequel is that Smith will be returning to star as part of his multi-picture deal with Netflix.
Netflix’s model means that we’ll likely never know how many people watched Bright on its opening weekend, or at any time, thus determining whether the film is a hit with audiences is a challenging proposition.
But considering Smith is the biggest of the big stars they’ve brought on board, and Bright is arguably their biggest film release yet, Netflix is counting on it being the film that pushes them closer to truly competing with the big movie studios. The film arrives on Netflix tomorrow – Friday, December 22 – and who knows, could be an important landmark in film history when we look back in twenty years or so.
