The BBC have just released a new trailer for their Victorian-based Sherlock special – The Abominable Bride. When Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat first went about modernising Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle fans were shaking their heads in bemusement; such a thing hadn’t been done since the Basil Rathbone films flung Sherlock into the then-contemporary interwar period. It’s amusing that now fans of the new Sherlock consider it madness to place Sherlock Holmes back into Victorian London, his original stomping ground.
However, people have now more or less come over to the idea of Mr. Holmes not wearing a deer-stalker ironically and are looking forward to the latest adventure of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. With the festive special nearly upon us, the BBC have released a new trailer, giving us a creepy look at Holmes and Watson solving an impossible case involving a dead bride murdering several men.
However, don’t expect Sherlock to get too attached to the squalor, suits and gin of Victorian London as he will be returning to the present day for the fourth series of Sherlock sometime in the next few years; the latest sources suggest sometime in 2017. To see Sherlock and Watson in The Abominable Bride, tune in to BBC One on New Year’s Day at 9pm. If you can’t wait that long, satisfy yourself with the trailer below.
