A brand new trailer has been released for Steven Spielberg‘s highly-anticipated adaptation of Ernest Cline‘s novel, Ready Player One. The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of collapse. But society has found an escape from the hell of the real world: OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by brilliant, eccentric billionaire James Halliday.
The film then follows Wade Watts (Tyler Sheridan), who joins a worldwide contest to find a hidden easter egg within OASIS, with the winner standing to inherit half a trillion dollars from the now-deceased Halliday, and perhaps more importantly, gain full control of the whole system.
The trailer below is Tron-esque in its sci-fi, neon aesthetics, and in other hands its central storyline might look a little cheesy. However, it’s fair to give Spielberg the benefit of the doubt until we see the film, as he’s had a knack in his career of turning potential cheese into legendary, heartfelt characters.
Alongside Sheridan, the film also stars Mark Rylance, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T.J. Miller and Simon Pegg. The film hits cinemas March 30, 2018.
