Nicholas Sparks, the author of The Notebook, has admitted on IMBD asks, that “No one wanted to play Noah”. The lead character of Sparks’ book, eventually went to actor Ryan Gosling when it was adapted for the screen in the 2004.
Sparks continues, “A lot of actors said, ‘Well, whats Noah’s arc?’ it’s a guy who falls in love and then he just kinda does nothing, and then waits for her to show up, and then he’s there and he’s still in love, and then at the end of the film, well, he’s still in love. Where’s the arc?”
Despite this difficulty in finding an actor, Sparks notes that, “Ryan Gosling came in and really showed what you could do, even if the arc was relatively minimal”. While the film received mixed reviews on its release, it later gained a cult following, after audiences noted the on-screen chemistry of both Gosling and Rachel McAdams.
