Nicolas Cage was infamously set to play Superman over twenty years ago, when he signed on to play the ‘Man of Steel’ in Tim Burton‘s Superman Lives, a film which was eventually abandoned. Since then, fans have always wondered what the iconic hero would have looked like with Cage in the role. Well, we’re finally going to get our answer…sort of.
Cage has been in cast as Superman – the voice of Superman – in the upcoming Teen Titans GO! to the Movies, a feature film adaptation of the popular Cartoon Network show Teen Titans GO! Alongside Cage, singer/songwriter Halsey will voice Wonder Woman while rapper Lil Yachty plays Green Lantern.
Superman Lives would have been Burton’s next film after 1996’s Mars Attacks!, but was delayed multiple times thanks to script and budget issues. Burton then left the film to go and make Sleepy Hollow, and a new Superman film lingered in development hell until Superman Returns finally made it to cinema screens in 2006.
The entire saga is chronicled in the documentary The Death Of Superman Lives: What Happened?, and while this role isn’t quite going to make up for not getting to witness Cage as the ‘Man of Steel’, it’s a solid consolation prize.
Teen Titans GO! to the Movies will focus on main characters Robin, Starfire, Raven, Cyborg and Beast Boy seeking out a popular Hollywood director as they look for their big pop culture break. The film arrives in cinemas Friday, July 27.
