With the release of his new single “Jeje”, Nigerian afrobeats singer D.Matthews is making waves in new musical cultures with his diverse sounds and frenzied rhythm. The lively drums and sensual, melancholic flow, sprinkled with a saxophone melody, take listeners into the world of the artist.
Olumide Toluwanimi David Matthews, also known as D.Matthews, is a fast-rising star in the contemporary Afrobeats scene, born and raised in Nigeria. At 20 years old, he began recording as a self-employed musician and released a song the following year.
His musical genres include Afrobeats, pop, dancehall, and reggae. Burna Boy, Fela Kuti, and fellow Nigerian singer-songwriter WizKid are three of D.Matthews’ artistic inspirations.
D.Matthews has worked with musicians from New Zealand, Edyonthebeat and Shaan Mehta, as well as from Ghana, Possigee, who has produced music for artists like Wizkid, Mr. Eazi, Sarkodie, and Stonebwoy. Additionally, he has performed and worked with Skales, a famous Afrobeats artist from Nigeria.
Since releasing his first solo record in 2018, D.Matthews has dropped several singles, a 5-track EP titled “Renewal”, and special international features from artists on various continents. He hopes to expand his fan base in new areas this year and is working with a group of international music industry experts to improve his music.
