Fresh off their Academy Award nominations for The Lost Daughter, Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley are set to reunite on a new film. This one is a comedy titled Wicked Little Letters, which is being produced by Studiocanal and will launch sales at the Cannes Film Market.
Based on a true story, the movie will see the actors play very different neighbours who come together to solve a mystery.
Rose Gooding has little in common with pious Edith Swan aside from them being neighbours in a seaside town in the 1920s. One day, Edith and others in the town start receiving scandalous letters written with foul language, and the finger of suspicion immediately falls on Rose.
As Rose stands to lose her freedom and the custody of her daughter and the letters continue to blight the town, police officer Gladys Moss begins to suspect something is amiss. Together with a group of resourceful women, Gladys endeavours to solve the mystery, liberate Rose, and catch the real culprit.
Deadline have already made comparisons to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, another crime comedy that was produced by Graham Broadbent and Peter Czernin, who are doing the same with this movie.
Thea Sharrock (Me Before You) will direct the film from a script penned by Jonny Sweet. Colman will also produce for South Of The River alongside Ed Sinclair. Sharrock said in a statement:
“Wicked Little Letters is a divine comedy with a profoundly moving core. Hilarious, witty, joyous and based on a true story as relevant today as it was 100 years ago. Watching this film will be like hitting your funny bone; when the tears of pain and laughter are impossible to separate.” Colman and Sinclair added:
“We could not be happier to be sitting alongside Studiocanal and Blueprint in bringing this amazing true story to life. Wicked Little Letters is as hilarious as it is unexpected with beautifully and affectionately drawn characters across the board.”
Colman will next be seen in Irish coming-of-age comedy drama Joyride, Paul King‘s musical fantasy prequel Wonka, and Sam Mendes‘ romance film Empire Of Light. She’s also got upcoming MCU miniseries Secret Invasion and the new BBC/FX adaptation of Great Expectations in the works.
Buckley can soon be seen in Alex Garland‘s horror film Men and Sarah Polley‘s adaptation of Miriam Toews‘ novel Women Talking.
Principal photography for Wicked Little Letters is currently slated to begin in the autumn in the UK.
