On the first Monday of May, the highly anticipated Met Gala 2023 took place to benefit the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the largest art museum in the Americas, which plays a pivotal role in preserving, documenting, and teaching fashion history.
The Met Gala 2023, often referred to as “fashion’s biggest night,” showcases exceptional design from both established and emerging talents, with attendees going to great lengths to impress under the particularly bright spotlight.
The Met Gala 2023 red carpet fashion celebrated the legendary 65-year career of Karl Lagerfeld, thanks to the Costume Institute’s spring 2023 exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” The exhibition highlighted the late designer’s renowned work at Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his eponymous label, providing ample inspiration for attendees’ outfits.
The best-dressed individuals were those who creatively paid tribute to Lagerfeld’s signature looks—whether it was his personal style, characterized by elegant ties, crisp shirts, and blazers, or the recurring use of pearls, bows, and tweeds in his collections.
The night also featured some truly unexpected fashion moments, such as Nicole Kidman re-wearing the pink Chanel couture dress that Lagerfeld had designed for her 2004 Chanel No. 5 advertisement. Kidman demonstrated that repurposing clothing can result in an incredibly chic appearance.
Perhaps the most unforgettable moment of the evening was the arrival of Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, who donned stunning white Valentino ensembles featuring floral cocoon capes for her and a black jacket, kilt, and bejewelled pants for him. If the Met were to have a royal couple, they would undoubtedly be it.
