Pete Davidson and O’Shea Jackson Jr. are teaming up to star in a comedy-drama titled American Sole, set in the world of after-market sneakers. Ian Edelman (How To Make It In America) will write and direct the film, while Kevin Hart and NBA superstar Chris Paul will produce. STXfilms is developing the project
Stadium Goods, apparently the world’s premiere sneaker and streetwear marketplace, will serve as a consulting producer on the project. The film follows two guys in their twenties with mountains of college debt who set out to achieve their American dream by reselling sneakers on the secondary market. But things turn sour when their startup runs out of cash and a shady investor might be their only way out.
“A film about reselling sneakers?” I hear you ask. Well, the sneaker resale market is reportedly one of the fastest-growing segments of the fashion industry – $2 billion annually (which is expected to triple by 2025).
Now that brands manufacture rare models in very limited runs, some of the most highly sought-after shoes have people paying as much as $50,000 for a prized pair. Earlier this month, Stadium Goods helped auction off the Air Jordan 1 High Shattered Backboard Origin Story kicks for $615,000, which set the record for the most expensive shoe ever sold. So yeah, there’s definitely a film to be made here.
And you couldn’t really have picked a better duo to lead a film like this than Davidson and Jackson Jr., not only two rising stars but two very cool on-screen presences that will fit right at home within the world of sneaker dealing. They probably both have a solid collection themselves.
STXfilms chairman Adam Fogelson said in a statement: “We’re always looking for ways to tap into the zeitgeist, and anyone who’s paying attention to popular culture around the world knows that this particular trend authentically marries the worlds of fashion, music, sports and business, and this project has garnered genuine interest in all of those key verticals”.
Producer Paul added: “American Sole is a story about the highly exciting, very profitable sneaker industry and the secondary sneaker market. With my own personal passion for sneakers and the culture that drives it, I’m excited to be a part of telling this entertaining story”.
It’s way way way down on the list of things that truly matter, but Davidson is having a great year. He starred in two excellent films in the form of Big Time Adolescence and The King Of Staten Island, and also released is own Netflix special. He also just wrapped shooting on James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad and is on board to star alongside Colin Jost in wedding comedy Worst Man.
Jackson Jr. previously worked with STX before, having starred in the Heat-esque crime drama Den Of Thieves. He also recently appeared in the legal drama Just Mercy and blockbuster Godzilla: King Of The Monsters. He’ll soon be seen in the Apple TV+ series Swagger, which also boasts a superstar NBA producer in the form of Kevin Durant.
