The Libertines‘ new album – Anthems For Doomed Youth – comes out on September 11, they played a headline slot at Reading and Leeds this year, and vocalist Pete Doherty is drug-free. Everything looks hopeful, whereas before…not so much. In Doherty’s words, it feels like the band have “died and been buried and come back”. No-one could be sure if the band would rise from the ashes, but they did.
Doherty spent years struggling with drug addiction and he added that “when Carl looked me in the eye and actually believed me when I said I was going to give it a fucking go, it was like a miracle”. To be given another chance at greatness must have felt fantastic, and I wish the band a lot of luck this time around.
