Jon Bernthal stole the show in the acclaimed second season of Netflix and Marvel’s Daredevil as Frank Castle a.k.a, The Punisher. But the way his storyline played out in the season led to many viewers wondering what would the ultra-violent character be forced to confront in his own spinoff series?
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, star Bernthal explained that the Punisher storyline will explore the aftermath after successfully achieving vengeance:
“This season is much darker as it goes, it gets darker and darker and more visceral. The show takes you on this journey of Frank becoming more and more human again and then shutting off and shutting off and going back to what works for him, and the place where he kind of belongs, and I think that’s a place of solitude and of darkness and destruction”.
Tantalisingly, he went on to add: “It’s going to get into as dark and as brutal a place as you’ve ever seen in the Marvel world, I can promise you that”.
The cinematic MCU, and most of the TV incarnations of Marvel characters, have been criticised for being a little too homogenous at times. It will be interesting to see if Netflix’s The Punisher goes to the violent, darker places Bernthal promises. Much like Logan in the X-Men, this is one character whose story could prosper with an extra bit of added grit.
The Punisher will debut on Netflix later this year.
