For those of you that haven’t heard of Raphael Blake before, get to know him! Hailing from South East London, although now based in Nottingham, he is a spoken word poet. Now I haven’t always been keen on spoken word but Raphael Blake is something special, releasing his current video “It’s More Than Poetry” shows why.
Starting with what could be mistaken as an intro to a drum and bass video, it instantly draws you in, with the opening words “It’s More Than Poetry”, I was instantly mesmerised, taking in every single word. With the beat used and the tone of Raphael’s voice, it reminds me of the music that The Streets used to make. Clash sum up perfectly what Raphael is all about “Raphael Blake’s words have a musicality of their own, matched by a delivery which sits between the spoken word scene and the work of, say, Ghostpoet”.
Later this year, Raphael will release his debut body of work The Undergrad which will be a free 18-track mixtape, it will be released in three parts, each containing six tracks, “It’s More Than Poetry” is taken from the first part Ambition, which will be followed by Reality and Sacrifice, I really cannot wait to hear what Raphael Blake has to offer, to keep up to date with Raphael, follow him on twitter.
