South London rapper by way of France Octavian has been revealed as the winner of the official BBC Sound of 2019 poll.
The 23-year-old was chosen by a panel of music industry insiders including DJs, industry experts and fellow artists. His first full-length project titled Spaceman came out last year to tons of positive reviews. He now joins the coveted list of fellow alumni such as Adele, Ellie Goulding and Sam Smith, all of which have gone on to be successful thus far.
The young and talented rapper straddles different genres from grime, house, trap and UK drill. With this bold and eclectic genre fusion he has attracted many fans, notably Canadian superstar Drake who was filmed rapping along to Octavian’s breakthrough track “Party Here“, and designer Virgil Abloh who selected him to model for hs Louis Vuitton collection.
On receiving the honour, Octavian shared with The Guardian: “I knew that one day I was going to be successful. I get inspired and I try to make a new sound every day. It’s going to be a very loud year for me. Loads of music, loads of visuals, loads of albums.”
Beating pop singer King Princess and balladeer Grace Carter to take the title, this win for Octavian proves the exponential growth in popularity for rap music both domestically and overseas. May more successes for Octavian in 2019.
