A gem in the crown of UK R&B, Ray BLK returns to forefront once again in the build up to her upcoming debut album with a fresh new single and video which speaks volumes, the aptly titled “Empress” – serving also as the name of the album.
Suggestive by the name, the soothing new single is one that is all for female empowerment, provides another strong message about acknowledging your own self worth and not settling for anything less as Ray speaks on previous instances with males who just didn’t reach the standard. Ray BLK explains: “This is my story – done my way. It’s about seeing yourself, knowing what you deserve and it’s for girls to wake up and see themselves as empresses.”
Geej Ower has directed a simplistic but ultimately very powerful video to accompany the new track. Sat alone in a dimly lit cinema, Ray begins her performance – and then the seats around her slowly fill up, with friends and family, until the shot is finally packed with strong women who know what they are worth. Cameos include well-known faces including Maya Jama, Zeze Mills and Julie Adenuga.
Ray BLK’s debut album Empress will land at the end of the month before her headline show at London’s O2 Forum in Kentish Town on 3 October.
