Alex Kingston is to return to Cardiff to continue her role as Professor River Song on the BBC hit series Doctor Who for its Christmas Special, which will air this December. The synopsis for the special reveal that, “it’s Christmas Day and the TARDIS lands on a snowy village street, where the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) finds his wife River Song (Alex Kingston), who is waiting for him with a brand new adventure“.
Day one of filming starts this week in Cardiff, the special is written by lead writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, produced by Nikki Wilson and directed by Douglas Mackinnon (Doctor Who, Sherlock). With preparations really going well, the BBC revealed today that River Song will definitely be returning for a full episode.
River Song made her Doctor Who debut in 2008 when she appeared in ‘Silence of the Library’ and ‘Forest of the Dead’ with David Tennant’s incarnation of the Doctor, in which she actually died at the end of the episode. Since then, she has appeared in 15 episodes in total, mainly with Matt Smith, which lead to a younger version of River travelling with the Doctor, Amy and Rory, and lead to Song getting married to the Doctor in ‘The Wedding of River Song’ back in 2011.
Award winning actress Alex Kingston had this to say about her reappearance in the show, “to be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special. Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humour and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not”.
Steven Moffat, adds that, “another Christmas, another special for Doctor Who – and what could be more special than the return of Alex Kingston as Professor River Song? The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time”.
But the question on all Whovian’s minds right now is how will River return? The last time we saw River in ‘The Name of The Doctor’, she was a ghost which appeared in Clara’s sub-conscious. In this episode she said good-bye to the Doctor. Most fans thought that was forever. But if she is returning, maybe she will appear as a younger incarnation of herself.
One thing fans of Doctor Who now understand is that with Steven Moffat’s writing, ‘anything can happen’, especially with River Song. Now everyone just has to wait for December and see how the Doctor and River’s story pans out. There has not however been any discussion on whether or not companion Clara (Jenna Coleman) will appear in the Christmas episode with Alex Kingston and Peter Capaldi. So this also leads to us to think how series 9 will finish? Doctor Who returns for its ninth series on Saturday, September 19.
