This years Disney’s expo ‘D23’ has been a fountain of information, from a planned Star Wars theme park to new Disney Infinity sets coming to a Galaxy far far away. The Star Wars information has been coming thick and fast, and I love it. But nothing has measured up to the release of a cast photo of the hotly anticipated Star Wars spin-off movie Rogue One.
Previous details have been released of the story which is set before A New Hope and involves a crack team of resistance fighters who steal the plans for the dreaded Death Star. The very plans in fact that Princess Leia stashes inside of everyone’s favourite astromech droid R2-D2 at the classic saga’s opening. But now we, for the first time, get to see what that film is going to look like with a candid cast shot to tide us over till then. The photo shows previously confirmed actress Felicity Jones alongside Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna, Jiang Wen and Donnie Yen.
Unlike previous instalments, the photo seems to back Lucasfilms Kathleen Kennedy’s assertion that the film “will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe. [Going] into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for Rogue One”.
Disney also confirmed the presence’s of Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, Casino Royale), Diego Luna (Milk, Killing Them Softly), Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline, Mississippi Grind), Donnie Yen (Ip Man, Blade II), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly, Devils on the Doorstep), Forest Whitaker (The Butler, The Last King of Scotland), Alan Tudyk (Con Man, Firefly), and Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler, Four Lions) to round off the eclectic cast. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is to be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and is slated for release on December 16, 2016.
