Celebrity Big Brother winner Katie Price is confirmed as one of two celebrity judges for the RuPaul’s Drag Race live finale in London on May 28. Amongst her many duties to Queen Ru herself, Price is on the prowl to find the show’s very first international drag ambassador. From the start of May, British drag queens have been flaunting their “Charisma Uniqueness Nerve and Talent (C.U.N.T)” in hopes that they will win the coveted position.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the programme, RuPaul’s Drag Race uses an America’s Next Top Model format to showcase an array of the most fabulous drag queens from across the pond. The queens must perform comedy, sewing, style and singing challenges to wow the judges and make it to the top three. However, contrary to the cutthroat and unnecessarily aggressive competition shows of the past, where competitors are pitted against each other and spurred on by judges, RuPaul and his team (Michelle Visage and a series of alternating celebrity co-hosts) seem to really want their competitors to improve and, above all, be proud of who they are no matter what.
There is drama, of course – but there’s also love, friendship and a real focus on self-improvement and ‘sickening’ self-confidence. Indeed, the program is a breath of fresh air in the world of reality TV that focuses entirely too much on laughing at the competitors, and often forgets its possible to laugh with them too.
The winner of the UK drag ambassador crown will work alongside truTV to release a series of vlogs to accompany the UK premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race, which comes out on June 1st. The winner will also travel to Los Angeles to get a behind the scenes tour of Season 8 of the show. In addition, rumours have been flying for months that RuPaul is interested in creating a UK version of the show, so his decision to appoint a UK drag ambassador could be seen as a stepping stone. But maybe that’s just wishful thinking. And remember, “if you don’t love yourself how the HELL you gonna love somebody else, can I get an Amen?” – Amen!
